no you should not... you can if you need it.

if you have no need for layers, don't use them.

for the rest of the problem, try to share the .sla file somehow with one
of us.
without it, it will be hard to guess what's happening.

however, i see 99% chances that some details is not correctly set,
1% that you hit an error in scribus.
