just as a warning: never use "real" passwords when registering to
mailing lists!

most of them keep your password in clear. at least it seems to be a
standard feature in mailman.
(it seems that this has been changed in 2007... the question is: is
there are release of mailman with that feature? further research
suggests that it will come with mailman 3.0, which has being in
development for years and has no ETA... this reminds me of something...)

so, for the time being, use a password specific to mailing lists or, if
you're brave enough, one password for each mailing list.
