You seem to be doing Ok. As you note, if you highlight then apply a
style, it acts like a Character Style. If you apply it to an entire
frame, it applies the Character Style and all the Paragraph settings for
linespacing, indentation, and so on.
Some prefer to never use the Story Editor and do all their editing on
the main canvas in Edit Contents mode, but that's a personal decision.
