Why scribus.net had to gain that /canvas thing and then get a redirect
to it that slows down loading the page is beyond my understanding.

On the topic, using webfonts and jQuery doesn't necessarily slow down
the website. It's all down to the design of the system,
parallelization of downloads etc.
