If it ever gets finished, a Scribus epub exporter or converter is a more
sensible way to go. Epub to mobi convertors are quite good. There has
been some work on an IDML importer to Scribus, but not an exporter to IDML.
My experiences with converting PDFs to epub or mobi formats are not
good, regardless of the method. Typically the biggest problem is the
lack of flexibility of the text flow, which needs to adapt to font and
font size on the reader.
As things stand right now, I would prefer to use the raw material (text
and images) and make an epub with Sigil.
