I have been learning (slowly) Python using A Byte of Python by Swaroop C H
The V2 PDF is available at
http://files.swaroopch.com/python/byte_of_python.pdf although it looks
like Swaroop now links to the online book at
http://www.swaroopch.com/notes/ (he has a book on VIM here as well.)
A Python editor is recommended by him as an easy way to get started with
Python.
