as far as i know, it's like a .dmg for mac.

download it, run it. (you might need to give the file executable rights...)

if you google for appimage you'll learn more about it, both from its own 
home page

btw, afaik, the appimage is not updated automatically yet, but it will 
be soon... (thanks kunda && probono!)



and, yes, you can use a stable and a development version of scribus 
alongside on the same machine.

but the file you have saved with 1.5 won't open anymore with 1.4.
only work on backups of existing files or be ready to start from scratch

p.s.: if you're a full time user of scribus you might want to use a 
distribution that makes it easy to you to try its newest version... just 
saying...
