1.5.3 has enhanced speed for working on large linked text frames
but i still work on chapter-wide documents
and i manage global issues using a pair of scripts.

It seems you have global references, indexes
that prevent you work on several short files
but you could also work on small files for all preparation and layout work,
-- thus benefiting of a quick UI --
and only merge files in the end so as to proceed with references work
and export to PDF.
