The major changes that went into Scribus 1.5.3 have only received a few
years of testing in the field, so there may be bugs lurking there. You will
find that many tutorials written for Scribus 1.4 do not apply cleanly to
Scribus 1.5. Also, Scribus cannot edit documents saved by too new versions,
so if you work in a team, everyone needs to be on the same release series.
Myself, I use both 1.5.x and 1.4.x. I use 1.5 when I need new features,
such as OpenType advanced font features, and I use 1.4 to edit older
documents. If you have no need to support older documents I would recommend
starting with 1.5. If you have existing Scribus 1.4 documents, I would
caution against upgrading to Catalina until you know that you can support
your workflow with 1.5. As with any software update, considerable changes
went into 1.5 and you will need time to learn and appreciate the new
features.
I have no complaints about the stability of either 1.4.8 or 1.5.5.
With kind regards,
Bert Driehuis
