[Scribus] libfontconfig.so.1 failure

Hello all!

I have successfull compiled all versions of Scribus on my Redhat 9.0 box 
up until Scribus version 1.0.1.  I cannot
get this verison to compile.... It fails with:

/usr/lib/libfontconfig.so.1: undefined reference to `FT_Get_Next_Char'
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status

I am clueless. Anybody have any suggestions? All ideas welcome.
