[Scribus] can't export to pdf

I have a project in Scribus that I'd like to export to PDF, but can't
seem to get that export feature to work.  Here's what I'm doing:

* choose File -> Export -> PDF
* click 'ok' to accept the default settings

After choosing 'ok', I get the following error message:

"Can't write the file: <filename>"

I'm getting the same results with version 1.1.3 and with CVS (checked
out yesterday).  Is this a configuration issue?  Is there a way to work
around this problem?
