Elaine,
I'm not one of the Mac people on the list, but it would help those who 
are if you can spell out what exactly you did do, so they can look for 
something you missed.
In Linux, you can launch from a command line, which can frequently give 
useful failure messages rather than just not working.  Do Macs have 
command line interface (of some sort)?
