Anything but bitmaps :-)

If the font is not embedded, Scribus just outputs the charcodes.
If it is embedded but not subsetted, it uses charcodes into the 
embedded font (not necessarily standard ones ATM).
If it is embedded and subsetted, Scribus converts to glyph outlines 
(vectors) ATM.
