[Scribus] AND operation

Matthijs,

Something similar can be done as in example 4 here: www.market-square.info/pages/pdf_design.htm

In that case, where the text is over the logo, (there a circle) the text is white/transparent, cutting clean.
This effect can be achieved by transforming your text into an outline, and then combining polygons when they overlap... no changing your text or your mind after that though!
Text larger than a few lines is likely to take loads of time and crash scribus. Save before you click.

Please post an image of the final result as a picture may be worth a thousand words about what you want to achieve, and that may help understand what needs to be done to achieve it.

It is, however the PDF can contain default settings.. and Scribus provides
access to these.

Hi all,

a Hardware upgrade permitted me to install the latest Kubuntu alongside my SuSE partitions and WinXP.

Apart from being extremely impressed aboout integration, speed (Kubuntu has a bunch new packages installed while SuSE still tries to read the repositories) and ease of use, I still try to figure out how to compile Scribus there.

I assume I installed everything mentioned in the docs, but I still get this one on the console:

checking for X... configure: error: Can't find X includes. Please check your installation and add the correct paths!

Which package is missing?

Thx in advance

 From the Ubuntu wiki:

If a configure script asks for "X includes", you should probably install
the following packages: xlibs-dev, xlibs-static-dev,x-window-system-dev

Hi,
two questions:

1. It is possible to assign a line below or above a paragraph, e.g. to
get a horizontal seperator line?
The line should be "anchored" to the paragraph, i.e. it should move
up/down together with the paragraph.

2. I need a seperator line between columns when having two or more
colums in a text frame.

Thanks!
Gerd

It is not possible yet.

The easy workaround for this is simply draw a line an position it
precisely using the Properties palette.

Hi All!

I've got a question, I would like to have an area filled with text,
where you can see a logo in the text.

The text should be black everywhere, but white at those points where
it intersects with the logo. The logo itself should not be printed!

Is there a way of doing this?
(I believe this is called an AND-operation on the logo and the text?)

Thanks a lot in advance!!

Matthijs

If Scribus does not handle this, where can we go to find how to do this. I
was trying to do the same thing yesterday, but I was using PS CS2.

Thanks,
Nick

1) There's a workaround with inline objects:
create a horizontal line somewhere on the canvas,
select and copy it to clipboard
enter text edit mode and navigate to the position after the paragraph
    paste from the clipboard.

Inline objects have some severe limitations but might work for you (they get
lost
when copy/pasting a textframe, they can't be edited while inlined).

2) It's considered bad typesetting style to use vertical rules. Try to
the gap between the columns and look if you like it. If you really want
vertical rules you have to use Louis's workaround for now.

Hello,

if you're not opposed to bitmap applications, and want to stick to OSS
... have a look at the GIMP. There you can work with layers in a
gazillion different ways...

If you're into vector imaging, you could have a look to Inkscape too. I
don't know if it's actually possible in that app either.

I remember in Corel Draw it's one of the advanced features (lenses).

Anyhow, in Inkscape you could place your text... invert the text and use
that inverted text as "pattern" to fill the logo.
It's not really and "and" function" but the result is equal.

I'm not that familiar yet with Scribus as graphic application, I believe
its strenght lies in the DTP-capacity. For graphics design I'll be
tending to Inkscape.

Just my ? 0,02
Jurgen.

Christoph,

Take a look at my Debian/Ubuntu packages to see what depends you need. The
relevant info is in the "debian/control" file. You can fetch a source package
with automatic unpacking with "apt-get source scribus" for 1.2.x or
"scribus-ng" for 1.3.x. The repository addresses are listed at
debian.scribus.net.

Regards,

Alex.

Thank you both very much, Greg and Alex.

Four current versions of Scribus are now up and running under Kubuntu :)

Cheers,

If the text was made into paths you could use the intersection and
exclusion processes. Use one copies of the paths in partnership with
one copies of the logo to get the outside. Use one copy of the logo
and the text as paths to get the logo shape. Which is probably what
Jurgen is saying as you would then invert the colour of one of the
blobs you create. I have not tried this with a body of text instead of
a shape but the principle is the same.

I would keep a copy of the editable text in position with the logo in
a backup file for inevitable rewangles. =)

Janet
