Probably, you want to do MASKING - that's what it's called n bitmap
packages like GIMP.  This subject is explained in elaborate detail in
www.Gimp-Savvy.Com - Grokking the Gimp.  Though you will get a bitmap
but the net effect is (if I am not wrong) what you want.
