Made sure: gs-gpl is used in version 8.54.dfsg.1-5. From gs-afpl only 
version 8.53-0.2 is available in etch, but using this, doesn't help.
To be completely sure, I removed the gs-esp package.

Unfortunally with Scribus 1.3.3.6.dfsg-1, I had the same problem.
