The fault lies in the paragraph styles associated with the templates. 
The initial substitution dialogue doesn't work.  All it does is mark 
certain typefaces with a "s" for substitution. But they all default 
to Bitstream charter Bold Italic in the document.  The only cure I 
have found is to delete the individual paragraph styles and then 
rebuild them.
