afaict, this is not about better or worse quality.

printing directly or through the pdf should give you the same quality.
(if you ever manage to correctly print)

in my eyes, it's more about struggling for hours to get your printer to
work with scribus (even for landscape pages) or just use the pdf reader.

and since most jobs created from scribus are not printed on your own
local printer (pdf distributed over the net, print shop, ...) i think
it's not such a bad idea to have a workflow that goes through a pdf
file.

exactly. and for the beginner it's better to tell her to just use a pdf
reader and not lose hours trying to setup the printer.

definitively not the best solution one can think of... but a better
user experience than spending hours to -- eventually -- manage to setup
your printer before you see for the first time the result of your work!
