In this case, your accusation of Ubuntu is totally unfounded.  Although the
gentleman apparently did not realize it, he did have a choice when the
upgrade to the latest version of Ubuntu Linux was done.  Ubuntu does not
automatically upgrade from a stable version to an unstable version.  The
fact that both exists in their repositories is proof of that.  Ubuntu sees
the two versions as different apps as much as GIMP and Inkscape are
different apps even as you pointed out it your first paragraph.
